The Philosophy Behind the Craft

At the heart of my work is a desire to understand and use wood well. The understanding of wood's unique properties informs every stage of furniture construction. This knowledge, combined with continual experimentation with different woodworking techniques and joinery methods, guides the efficient and creative construction of furniture designed for lasting use.

The quiet in the workshop is essential to this process. It provides an environment free from distraction, allowing for the focused concentration necessary to choose and execute the most effective and efficient practices, and to achieve a high level of craftsmanship.

The primary aim is to build furniture that performs its intended job well, and endures the use and abuse that comes through everyday life. Secondarily, it must be aesthetically pleasing, if not beautiful. Hand tools are used for many tasks when appropriate, but not exclusively. Machines like table saws, planers, electric drills and bandsaws are used when they make work more efficient and do not compromise the integrity of the joinery or level of finish.

The Christian faith informs everything I do, from my approach to work in prayerful silence, to the values of simplicity and honesty upheld in workmanship and in business.

Ultimately, this way of making furniture is a creative process that results in exceptional furniture that makes life better in some way, while allowing me to make a living through the honest application of my skills.
